He is the author of many journal articles investigating a vast range of musical topics. Michael’s own music encompasses media music, experimental, electroacoustic, theatre and concert music as well as music for young musicians. Much of Michael’s concert music for piano and other instruments has been based on Australian birdsong, drawing upon field recordings he has made.
These three evocative bird songs recall the vivid freshness and endless invention of French composer Olivier Messiaen’s many and varied essays in bird song, famously deployed in his solo flute piece Le merle noir (blackbird). Michael’s suite comprises depictions of the Australian magpie in a pre-dawn song, the pied butcherbird and the magpie lark.
